The South Korean athletes competing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games suffered their first ‘medal-less day’ since the start of the Games.

Despite not adding any medals, the team is still in sixth place in the medal standings with 11 gold, eight silver and seven bronze as of Saturday (local time), the same as the previous day.

The table tennis team continued to push for medals.

The South Korean women’s team of Shin Yoo-bin, Lee Eun-hye (Korean Air), and Jeon Jeon-hee (Mirae Asset Securities) defeated Sweden 3-0 on a match score of 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the women’s team table tennis event at the South Paris Arena in Paris, France, today.

It has been 12 years since South Korea reached the semifinals of the women’s team event at the Olympic Games, after finishing fourth in London 2012.

The semifinalists are now just one win away from their first medal in the event since Beijing 2008, when they finished with a bronze medal.

Korean women’s table tennis will play the winner of the China-Taiwan match in the semifinals.

The ‘gold medal doubles team’ from the Hangzhou Asian Games, Shin Yoo-bin and Jeon Jeon-hee, opened with a 3-0 (11-2 11-7 11-5) victory over Philippa Bergand and Christina Calveri at first doubles.

At No. 2 singles, Lee Eun-hye (No. 44) defeated Sweden’s top-ranked singles player (No. 32) Linda Verström, who uses a heterolover in her defense, 3-1 (2-11 11-4 12-10 13-11) in a tightly contested match.

World No. 15 Jeon Jeon Hee topped 59th-ranked Calvary 3-1 (8-11 13-11 11-6 11-6) at third singles to close out the match.

The South Korean men’s table tennis team of Jang Woo-jin (sponsored by SEA), Lim Jong-hoon (Korea Exchange), and Cho Dae-sung (Samsung Life Insurance) defeated Croatia 3-0 in straight sets in the round of 16 of the team event.

Croatia is a powerhouse, ranked 11th in the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) team rankings, the highest of any Eastern European country.

They have been a tough opponent for Korea on the international stage.

However, South Korea, ranked No. 6 in the ITTF Team Rankings, swept Croatia in Paris.

Korea will play China, who defeated India 3-0 in straight sets, for a spot in the semifinals on Sunday at 10 a.m. ET (5 p.m. PT).

Seo Chae-hyun (Seoul Metropolitan Government, The North Face) finished 13th out of 20 athletes with a 44.2 in the women’s semifinal bouldering event of the Sport Climbing Combined (bouldering + lead) at the Le Bourget Climbing Arena in Paris.

The Sport Climbing Combine combines the bouldering and lead scores to determine the top eight athletes out of 200, who advance to the finals where they compete for a medal.

Seo, a strong lead athlete, will attempt to flip in the lead competition at 10 a.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) on Aug. 8.

Shin Eun-cheol (The Shield-The North Face), who competed in the men’s Sport Climbing Speed qualifier, failed to advance to the quarterfinals.

World No. 29 Shin, who finished 10th out of 14 in the first and second qualifying rounds, had a one-on-one battle with No. 2 Wu Feng (CHN) for the quarterfinal ticket.

Shin is ranked 29th in the International Federation of Mountain Sports (IFSC) men’s speed category, while Wu is ranked second.

Eun-cheol Shin got off to a better start than Wu Feng as he spurred out as soon as the gun went off, but he slipped in the middle and clocked 7.24 seconds. Wu Cheng rang the bell at 5.00 seconds.

Lee Jae-kyung finished 16th with a total of 381.40 points to earn one of 18 semifinal berths.

The men’s 3-meter springboard semifinals will be held on Sunday at 10 a.m. (5 p.m. ET).

The top 12 finishers in the semifinals will become the first Korean diving team to qualify for the Olympic finals in a single event, and will compete for a medal in the final at 3 p.m. (10 p.m. ET) on Aug. 8.

Lee Seung-chan (Gangwon Provincial Athletic Association) ended his campaign with a 0-9 loss to Amin Mirzazadeh (IRAN) in the consolation bracket of the men’s Greco-Roman 130 kg wrestling, while Kim Seung-joon (Sungshin Yanghoe) lost 0-9 to Artur Alexanyan (AREN) in the round of 16 in the men’s Greco-Roman 97 kg.
