Wrestler Ri Sewong, 25, who won North Korea’s fifth medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, said he had set his sights on gold but was disappointed with the bronze medal.

“My plan this time was to win the gold medal, but I’m disappointed that I only got the third place because I didn’t show my full potential,” Ri said at a press conference after winning the bronze medal in the men’s Greco-Roman 60-kilogram wrestling event at the Champs de Mars stadium in Paris, France, on Sunday (June 7).

Ri won the bronze medal later in the day with an 8-0 decision over Liber Jose Rodriguez Orozco (Venezuela) in the bronze medal match.

It was North Korea’s fifth medal of the Games (2 silver, 3 bronze).

Ri, who also won bronze in the event at last year’s Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, is the first North Korean wrestler to win an Olympic medal since Yang Kyong Il won bronze in the 55-kilogram men’s freestyle at London 2012.

Ri, who celebrated after his bronze-medal match by spreading his arms wide and running on the mat, was largely subdued at the awards ceremony.

He only flashed a brief smile as he posed for a photo with other medalists during the “victory selfie” ceremony, where winners snapped photos with their Galaxy smartphones, courtesy of Samsung Electronics, an official partner of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

When asked about his medal at the press conference, Lee first expressed his disappointment, but then vowed to work harder to become a world champion.

“I will also study at university and become a big person in the future,” he added. 동행복권파워볼
